Influx of capital drops Lebanon's balance of payments to $200 million

Salameh: 'We expect the positive trend to continue until the end of the year'

Lebanon's accumulated balance of payments in the first nine months of 2005 fell to $200 million thanks to the influx of capitals and funds into the country, said Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh.

"The balance of payments is definitely improving and we expect the positive trend to continue until the end of the year," Salameh told The Daily Star. Salameh added that the market has been more relaxed since June.

The governor also said that the gross foreign-currency reserves is more than $11.3 billion, adding that the Central Bank has been buying dollars from the market since June.

The successful issuance of the $750 million Eurobonds, which was snapped up be local banks and foreign investments funds, also helped inject more liquidity into the market.

According to the monthly bulletin of the Central Bank, the balance of payments in August recorded a surplus of $404.5 million while the accumulated balance registered a deficit of $344 million in the first eight months of 2005.

The assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February shook the market as most economic indicators fell in the first six months.

Salameh said that Lebanon's Gross Domestic Product will range between zero percent to 2 percent at the end of the year, adding that the situation is witnessing positive developments.

The bulletin also said the public debt reached close to $34 billion in the first eight moths of the year although some economists estimate the debt at more than $36 billion.

Meanwhile interest rates on treasury bills and bonds remained unchanged during the month of August.

Ate the end of August, yields on the various categories were as follows: 5.22 percent on three months; 7.24 percent on the six months; 7.75 percent on the one year; 8.50 percent on the two year and 9.34 percent on the three year bonds.

The consolidated balance sheets of commercial banks in the same reporting period recorded a year-on-year growth of 5 percent, reaching LL101.358 trillion ($67.5 billion).

The bulletin said that during the month, the trade deficit stood at $674.5 million, decreasing by 13.8 percent.

In value, imports declined by 9.4 percent, falling to $834.4 million, while exports rose by 15.4 percent to reach $159.9 million.
