|Ghazi Kenaan gives his "last statement"
|"I wish to clarify that our relationship with our brothers in Lebanon has been based on love and mutual respect, and a desire to help Lebanon overcome its current ordeal.
We served Lebanon's interests with honor and loyalty"
"I regret that some biased media has made a habit of broadcasting lies to mislead public opinion, such as New TV during its news bulletin late on Tuesday which alleged a meeting had taken place with members of the commission within the framework of Syrian assistance to unravel the truth behind the assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri, based on claims that Syria has a great interest in the murder.
Regarding the statement made by the Syrian interior minister before the committee, it dealt with the period of our service in Lebanon and I answered every question I was asked objectively.
Consequently, I wish to clarify that the information broadcast by NTV is erroneous and fully fabricated, and both we and the committee possess a copy of the transcript that will enable us to expose these lies which aim to create prejudice against former Premier Hariri and us, when neither he nor us are capable of such acts.
What are the motives of the station? Perhaps hatred or has it been fed with poison? I used to follow the station's news but it has lost credibility lately.
I wish to clarify that our relationship with our brothers in Lebanon has been based on love and mutual respect, and a desire to help Lebanon overcome its current ordeal.
We served Lebanon's interests with honor and loyalty and the public should be the judge of that regardless of any circumstances.
We gave and took from all noble men in Lebanon, namely politicians, reporters and citizens of all affiliations, and cooperated with Lebanon, sparing no blood, to achieve the unity and freedom of Lebanon at a time when such an achievement was impossible without Syria.
The circulating reports that claim our relations were driven by other motives are only true in the minds of those circulating them for political purposes or to instigate hatred.
We call for objectivity, for examining one's conscience and for fearing God when making such allegations.
[Addressing the interviewer Warde, Kenaan said:] Thank you Mrs Warde, I wished to make a statement in recognition of your objectivity and your role on the Lebanese scene. I understand you played a positive role in serving the Christians and Lebanon as well as objectivity in the media. This is why I wished to make this statement to you and I hope that you can pass it on to Pierre Daher [chairman of the LBC], Future TV, NBN and other broadcast media because I believe this is the last statement it is possible for me to give."
