MTV is off the air

Following the decision to forbid MTV to continue its broadcast, demonstrations occured in the center of Beirut.
The decision was taken by the « tribunal des imprimés ». The tribunal explains that MTV didn't respect the law on political advertisng during the last election in Metn.

But according to people asked to react on this issue, it is rather the fact that MTV was about to cover general Aoun's trip to US that motivated the decision.

MTV is appreciated by a certain category of the Lebanese population and the issue seems to be more political than it looks like.

The whole media and journalists communities reacted firmly against a decision that threatens the freedom the press and the liberty of expression. The Minister of information, Mister Ghazi Aridi also expressed its desagreement and decided not to attend the Ministers' council on the 4th of september.

MTV staff and their families also demonstrated in the center of Beirut where the police used water pumps to stop the protest march.

Last week we wrote our satisfaction to see downtown Beirut insuflating a new breath to the city, this week end the access to this area has been prohibited.

Demonstrators are to continue their movement until MTV recovers its right to broadcast.

A national congress on public freedom was foressen to be held on Monday, gathering students, lawyers, journalists and representatives of the civil society.
