UN envoy travels to Egypt to discuss 1559

Terje Roed-Larsen sees 'eye to eye' with Hosni Mubarak

Ahead of his scheduled visit to Lebanon Friday to monitor the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559, UN Middle East envoy Terje Roed-Larsen met with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak to discuss the resolution.

Following the meeting Thursday at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Larsen said: "I had a very good meeting with President Mubarak, we discussed all issues related to Security Council Resolution 1559."

"I think we see eye to eye on all issues related to the resolution and I go very encouraged from my meeting here," he added.

United Nations Security Council resolution 1559 issued on September 2, 2004 mainly calls for the complete withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.

However, Larsen avoided a question about whether he would ask Damascus for a withdrawal timetable during a planned visit there Saturday where he will meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

On Wednesday, Secretary General Kofi Annan said in Spain that he hoped that "the envoy will be able to come back with a timetable" for a Syrian pullout.

According to a UN spokes-man in Beirut, after holding talks with Jordanian officials in Amman later Thursday, Roed-Larsen is expected to be in Beirut Friday to offer his condolences to the family of the late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

"He will travel to Damascus on Saturday to meet Syrian leaders and will return Sunday to Beirut to meet with the president, the parliament speaker, the prime minister and the foreign minister," Nejib Friji said.

Larsen is expected to press for a full and immediate withdrawal of Syrian army and intelligence services from Lebanon in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1559, said Friji.
