'Doing Business in Iraq' Conf. kicks off its activities on june 5

Under the Patronage of H.E. Dr. Salah Al Bashir, Jordan Minister of Industry and Trade the one-day conference “Doing Business with Iraq” kicked off its activities at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday June 5th , 2003 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Amman. The conference is organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Jordan (JABA), the Information Technology Association (int@j), and the Jordan Exporters’ Association (JEA).

The conference consisted of five panel discussions. Each panel focused on a certain issue, where participants were able to ask questions and receive first hand information that will assist them in their business efforts. The panels included high profile speakers representing US companies with contracts in Iraq, top Jordanian and US government officials involved in the reconstruction process, and representatives from the United Nations and USAID Mission in Iraq.

The morning sessions focused on investment promotion and humanitarian aid for Iraq with main speakers from the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA) and the World Health Organization.

During lunch, H.E. Ambassador Edward Gnehm, Ambassador of the United States to Jordan delivered a special address on doing business with Iraq.

During the afternoon session, there were 3 panels, which included speakers from the Jordanian public and private sectors, where they focused their efforts on assisting businesses to work with Iraq. Also, representatives from US companies with contracts in Iraq, such as Parsons Brinkerhoff and Bechtel, participated with other representatives in talking about the expectations and mechanisms for doing business in Iraq with US companies.

H.E. Ambassador Karim Kawar, Ambassador of Jordan to the United States of America, joined the participants through a digital video conference from Washington, D.C. and gave remarks on the Jordan-US role in the reconstruction of Iraq.

Participants got a chance to meet their counterparts from the Jordanian, Iraqi or American businesses at the end of the conference and discussed the possibility of doing business jointly.

Over 1000 participants from Jordanian, Iraqi, American and International companies participated in this one-day conference that is considered to be one of the first and largest events on this issue in Jordan.
