Army arrests suspects in Tripoli blasts

Lebanese authorities on Sunday arrested a "terrorist network" behind deadly bomb attacks in Tripoli, the army said. "Several members of a terrorist cell involved in the recent explosions in Tripoli have been arrested," the army said in a statement. The army said an explosives belt was found during the arrest operation carried out by a joint unit of soldiers and Internal Security Forces troopers.

A security source told The Daily Star that three Palestinian men, believed to belong to the Fatah al-Islam militant group, were in custody, while the cell's Lebanese leader, Abdul Ghani Ali Jawhar, remained at large. The statement said those arrested were being questioned.

Fatah al-Islam fought a 15-week battle with the army at the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in 2007.

Four soldiers and three civilians were killed when an explosion ripped through a military bus in Tripoli on September 29. A similar attack in mid-August killed 14 people, including nine soldiers and a child.

Also Sunday, an army officer and a soldier were wounded when a wanted man they were tracking hurled hand grenades at them, a military official said. The incident took place in the Bekaa Valley town of Majdel Anjar, said the official, who did not indicate why the suspect was wanted.

The suspect threw four hand grenades at troops who raided his hideout and managed to flee, the official said.
