New scholarships will open door to AUB

The National Scientific Research Council (NSRC) reached an agreement with the American University of Beirut (AUB) Friday to offer full annual scholarships for top Lebanese high-school graduates beginning in the autumn of 2006. AUB president John Waterbury signed the deal with NSRC director-general Muin Hamzeh at the university's College Hall.

A total of 12 scholarships will be offered to the three highest-scoring students in each of the four Lebanese baccalaureate exams: general science, life science, society and economics, and literature and humanities.

"This will help us diversify our student body and offer the opportunity to study at AUB to students who might not otherwise come here," Waterbury said during the signing ceremony.

The scholarship will cover yearly tuition until the student finishes his or her first degree, and may also include an extra year of intensive English, as well as housing, books, and a monthly stipend depending on the needs of the student.

Recipients of the scholarship will be exempt from the SAT and TOEFL tests generally required of AUB applicants.

The project was proposed four years ago by late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri to give students the choice of applying to their preferred university instead of choosing based on their financial needs.
